Wire jewelry making is one of the oldest techniques for making jewelry the old fashioned way, by hand.   The wire is bent, looped and tucked thus using no heat or soldering, all hand and wrist  manipulated.  Wire wrapping, for me, allows me the opportunity to freely express myself in an artistic way.

I wire wrap a variety of mediums such as cabochons, shells, opals, cameos, pearls and gemstones  using sterling silver wire and 14k gold filled wire (also known as rolled gold). I would like to point out here though, that the gemstones that I wrap are man-made.  Now as just an extra piece of information, I want to point out that man-made, lab-grown, synthetic, simulated and imitation gemstones mean just about the same thing.

Let me explain the difference in the various types of gemstones:  synthetic and lab created gemstones have pretty much the same physical and chemical properties as the mined gemstones.  They are created in a lab, which is good because the conditions are more ideal and to get a good quality stone, and they pretty much come out with the same coloring.  Please note however that the simulated and imitation gemstones are not as perfect in their reduplication.  Their properties are not as pure as the mined stone and pretty much the only thing you can really go with is the visual aspect of it.  As for what gemstones I wire wrap, it is mostly the lab-grown, synthetic ones.

Additionally I love to wrap Mother Natures stones which would include turquoise, malachite, lapis lazuli, and onyx. These stones are purchased in the cabochon cut which makes it easier to wrap in wire.  I do however, wrap some free form stones in a caged style as in the piece found in the turquoise gallery.
