Amethyst - an extravaganza of the violet color. The name comes from the Ancient Greek meaning 'not intoxicated' following the belief that it prevented drunkenness. This particular stone is associated with those celebrating birthdays in the month of February. It seems that it is an appropriate stone for this month also because this is the month of the Mardi Gras and any protection sounds good to me. A great website to get more information on the specifics of this gemstone would be http://www.gemstone.org/gem-by-gem/gem-by-gem.html . They give a great breakdown of all gems. Now, for me, here at MyWireWorks, I love to wirewrapping this gemstone because I sense a sort of passion about it when I'm manipulating the wire. I do use the synthetic amethyst gemstone in my pieces, which I wrap in sterling silver or rolled gold wire. Each color of wire brings out a different strength to the color of the amethyst. The silver wire tends to lighten the stone and on occasions I have mistaken it for the alexandrite. By using the man-made (simulated) stones it makes the pieces of jewellry more affordable. I have on sale here a few of my wire wrapped amethyst pendants, I will at some point in the near future present my wire wrapped rings. Along with those that I have wrapped I have a few Marcisite rings that I have picked up along my travels. This stone just draws me in and I seem to pick it up whenever I see it. I hope you enjoy what I have to offer! |
